I'm a hazard to myself.
It's a good thing that I am in the habit of filling the kettle whenever I boil water. The kettle's whistle doesn't work, but usually I end up over-filling it. It slops out the spout when the water boils and makes a big hissing noise upon it hitting the burner, thereby alerting me that it's boiling and I should shut off the stove. Apparently I didn't over-fill it this time.

-Set kettle on stove to boil for hot chocolate (damn halloween candy commercials).
-(5 minutes) Load and run dishwasher while waiting for kettle.
-(6 minutes) Get sucked into the back half of a rerun of CSI:NY which was playing while I was loading the dishwasher.
-(20 minutes) Drift into trying to figure out my budget for the next two weeks during a commercial break.
-(25 minutes) Wonder why the bathroom fan is kicking in but don't think about it much since the dishwasher's running.
-(28 minutes) Wonder if something is wrong with the dishwasher because it's getting kind of steamy in the apartment.
-(29 minutes) "Oh crap, the kettle!"

So, all is well, no damage, no fire, kettle's fine, I'm fine. Am shifting from hot chocolate to tea though because obviously I need more brain.

It hadn't even boiled dry yet, it still had enough in it for a cup of hot chocolate. I have a big kettle, apparently.

Well, perhaps you feel better if I tell you how my husband tried to cook soup. He managed to burn water... More than 1 liter of water vaporized, only the chalk on the bottom of the pot was left and it started to make cracking noises. So about 1 hour after starting to cook soup he heard said noises while sitting at his computer and started to boil the water again. With the same result. Now we have an electric waterboiler that shuts itself off as soon as the water is boiling (after he nearly melted our first one that did NOT switch itself off).

You see, you are not the only person that hast troubles focusing on boiling water ;P

I am glad you are ok, and that you still managed to have hot chocolate. Had some myself tonight while I had the place to myself most of the day and evening:) I have flooded my bathroom twice leaving water running in the sink and getting distracted, so you are not alone there.

Hugs

If we could focus, we could take over the world. *nods*

You use water? I heat up milk for hot chocolate :D

Ah, at least you had the excuse of not having the whistle! Once my mom put the kettle on and managed to ignore/block out the whistle for like, five full minutes. I was in the shower and ended up getting out, all panicky, and rushing down to the kitchen, where she was knitting, calm as you please, with the damn thing screaming five feet away!

I nearly burn water, I think it's probably best I leave milk alone. ;-) Besides, it's kind of an 'all in one' mix.

Eeeeek! Eeeeek! I'm glad that had a happy ending, CK. I've never done that with a kettle (or a soup pot) but I used to have a warm-air humidifier that didn't turn off when it was out of water. First time it worked itself down past empty, I FREAKED. Got rid of it asap.

Added note: I agree with Anniehow. MILK for the hot chocolate. Tastes so much better. *nods*

I add milk after sometimes, but heating milk is rather beyond me. Also hot milk tends to give me heartburn, not sure why.

I, uh. Never do anything like that. *shifty eyes* And since I don't, I could certainly not offer you the advice of getting one of those electric kettles that shuts off automatically when it's boiled.

I'm not sure exactly why, but water boiled in an electric kettle doesn't taste right to me. Like it's got ozone in it or something. What I really need is to not be so distracti- Ooo! Shiny thing! *poing*

Thank goodness nothing was burning. I boiled the absolute HELL out of a bunch of eggs one time. Eggs make a neat popping sound when they are in a pot with no water left. o.O

Yeah, eggs get kind of explosive, don't they?

I'm sorry to laugh, but.... :D

oh heck I've done that :) think of it as a steam treatment to keep you young :D
