Nononononononononooooooooo!!!!
G-Mail is down. "For the count" it says, which unless I'm reading my metaphors wrong implies game over, dead.

Dude. Most of my life is in G-mail. I'm a data pack-rat. There's about 500 megs of stuff in my G-mail. If it- Just- Gnh!

*inflates a panic raft and hides in it*

ETA: Reports indicate it's back up in some areas, and accessible via Internet Explorer in other areas. Right now in my area of Coastal BC, Canada, iGoogle is showing me that there is new content in my inbox but not letting me access it. However things are looking positive! *crosses fingers*

ETA2: IT'S BAAAAAACK! *glomphs*

Your metaphor is right, but the rest of the article does not seem to indicate at all that it's game over-dead. I can't imagine the backlash if Gmail were to disappear. (Hell, my university's email is all run via gmail, too.) Regardless, may I hide in your panic raft, too? 'Cause everything is gone... craaaaaaap.

I'm actually hoping that the article is a case of shoddy journalistic panic-mongering at this point.

I can't imagine the backlash if Gmail were to disappear.

No kidding!

Plenty of room in the panic raft. *clings*

From what I understand by looking at other articles, the mail service still works (via other ways to get to it) but the website itself is behaving badly. However, the UK seems to already have access again, so its just us north americans having troubles? Not sure how that works, unless gmail has a .co.uk style extension for said Brits. Regardless, I am now convinced that it'll be back. ::firm nod:: ... and ::fingers crossed::

Also, you can get to your gmail via iGoogle. (This does not help me get to my ASU gmail, but at least I can read LJ and FB replies... that's productive helping...)

iGoogle here (pacific Canada) lets me see that I have new messages, but won't let me in to G-mail to see them. That is reassuring though that it still exists, even though it isn't currently accessible to me.

It's now working for me in Internet Explorer, but not Firefox.

I can't check it on Explorer at work (I.T. guy monitors Explorer usage but doesn't monitor Firefox too assiduously *winks*), but that is definitely reassuring, thank you!

Ooh thought it was just me! Must go try it on IE instead of Firefox...
irismay42 From: irismay42 Date: September 1st, 2009 09:29 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yeah, that works!

If it's not back up by the time the shop closes I'll have to try IE.

Looks like it's working on Firefox again now too!

It was in the newspaper today. Sounds like it was a gmail-wide crash. Eeep!

Seems to have been global. I wonder what caused it?

No kidding! The site I found with that article was not reassuringly worded. :-(
