Reaction: Doctor Who 5.01
Doctor Who 5.01 - The Eleventh Hour

-Oh, right, crashing. Gallifrey's just disappeared from the sky and everyone's just stopped being John Simm. It's been a weird day on planet earth, but isn't it always?

-Waaaait. I forgot there was going to be a new titles sequence. I didn't realize the Time Vortex would look different (again) but hey, the Master just kicked Rassilon's butt and sent his home planet back into the Time War Lock thing, soooo... I dunno, maybe they renovated the Time Vortex in the process? Sure, why not. Not like it hasn't changed every time TV graphic capabilities got a technical goose once in a while before.

-Lightning in the Time Vortex is cool, yet a tad worrisome... Maybe this is just the Tardis-is-crashing vortex. That would be- GAH! IT'S ON FIRE NOW! O.O

-Hi new logo! I'll get used to it. I got used to faces appearing out of the vortex, I got used to the space rocks, I got used to the big flat eye-shaped-thingy, I'll get used to this.

-Ha, Logo turns into Tardis. Cute. Not as cheesy as I dreaded it might be, so yay!

-Directed by Adam Smith... wasn't he the reality-controlling imaginary guy on Torchwood? XD

-Nice lighting in this garden. I guess since the Tardis was falling through the Vortex there, it's no longer just a few minutes after 'End of Time'

-"There's a crack in my wall." Started early with that, then? Good, so it's like the "Bad Wolf" thing for Series Five. Nifty!

-"Send a policeman." Wham. There's a police box squashing your shed (I guess the pool landing happens later). Santa's prayer response time is staggering.

-Something is odd about the music. Is it a different composer for Series Five? *googles* Nope, same bunch, I guess it's just new motifs for the new characters being established.

-"Apples!" Oh god, he's still got regenerative instability, doesn't he? *facepalm*

-Swimming pool! \o/ I feel bizarrely better that the Tardis has a pool, even though me making them eject it in unfinished fanfic has absolutely no effect on the series.

-The golden energy regeneration breath stuff that I can't remember the proper name for is more 'chunky style' than before. I have a theory about that stuff (not why it's chunky now, I have no idea) from when Nine regenerated and things, but I'll blither about that some other time. I'm only five minutes in and only have an hour before I need to go to sleep.

-"Do everything I tell you, don't ask stupid questions, and don't wander off." So exactly the opposite of every companion ever then? XD

-Matt Smith walks into things well. *nods*

-*headshake at the food sequence* No wonder Amy wound up in therapy. Where are her parents during all this? Or Aunt, whatever. Gotta admit, the whole lack of freaking out speaks well for her as a future companion.

-Whoa. Wait. Did the Doctor use hell in a pejorative sense? Is that new? I thought he chastised someone for using bloody or something once recently?

-Ten had a penchant for licking things, Eleven seems to have a penchant for throwing or spitting messy wet things around. Can't say as that's an endearing trait, but if he ever goes to a medieval feast he'll fit right in.

-Prisoner Zero. Ah. I think I know who that is too. And if so, of course he escaped. Duh.

-You know, I don't know what the rest of the series is going to be like, but right now I wish he'd kept wee!Amy as his companion. He's great with her, and she's unfazeable.

-OH CRAP CLOISTER BELL. If it's that loud, things are either really fucked, or the Tardis (which has been patiently sitting waiting to get righted fixed and whatnot, no doubt) has inverted herself and all the Tardis innerspace is spread out across the garden neighbourhood north-east of England. Probably not in the special effects budget though.

-"Five minutes, I'll be back" Yeeaaaaaah. Dude. So much therapy. *facepalm*

-Ohhhhh, wee!Amy packing a bag. Ohhhh. Oh crap, open door. More open door. Oh crap. O.O

-Wee!Amy would have been the most awesome companion ever. Aw.

-Yeah, abandon a lonely little girl, you get a cricket bat to the face.

-Oh hey, that's Rory! I thought he got introduced later. Or will get.

-"Doctor." No, they're not calling for the ward physician, but it's an understandable mistake.

-Ah, yes, the 'policewoman' kissogram outfit. Hee!

-"Cricket bat to the head, just what I needed." *is fighting very hard not to say unkind things about previous regenerations that could have used a cricket bat to the head, not looking at anyone in particular SIX*

-Rory's a nurse! That'll be handy.

-Somehow, I don't think handcuffs with a chain that long or seamed fishnets are standard police issue on Earth in the 21st century, but who knows, maybe they are in future eras, like when Captain Jack is from. Also that skirt is very much Not Practical.

-"Why does no one listen to me?" *pats the Doctor* Poor thing.

-It speaks well for Amy's moxie, the whole "lean over the table at the least stable angle of lean and pick up the weird impossible goo-coated thingy with your bare hands", however it also speaks very poorly for her common sense.

-"Don't look at it!" So of course she does. Gaaaaaaah!!!

-"They're all terrified of wood." Bwahahaahahah!

-Ohhhh, okay, I get the coma people connection now. Cool. But... is the guy's dog in a coma somewhere too? O.o

-"You broke into my house, it was this or a french maid." Hahahah!

-Twelve years late = Cricket bat. *nods* Indeed.

-"I'm the Doctor I'm worse than everybody's aunt." Hee! XD

-The Raggedy Doctor! Cartoons!! Oh yay! XD

-Is it just me, or if you were a giant eyeball stuck on a space ship, would you want the techno-porcupine parts of the rest of your fleet to stay well out of accidental poking range?

-"How do you know it's a duck pond if there aren't any ducks?" Well, there you are then.

-Yup. Rory, the only person facing away from the imminent doom. Cool. That sequence must have been fun to shoot, everyone standing still while the camera crew goes chasing around. Not sure how the Doctor saw all that, particularly small lettering on a bade facing away from him but *handwave*

-"Amy, I'm going to need my car back." The joy of small towns where everyone knows who you are. Arg.

-Aw, yeah, the apple! Hah!

-Yeah, with twenty minutes to go to the end of the world, random unusual lighting effects are highly suspect... O.o

-"Oh, my god, it's him!" HA! Yeah, drawing endless pictures of your 'imaginary' friend and showing them to everyone makes it really awkward when he shows up again.

-By the way, yeah, so I was wrong about who Prisoner Zero is. Was getting really far ahead of myself there. Oh well.

-Hey! The sonic screwdriver doubles as that light-putter-outer thing from Harry Potter, except more explodey.

-"Nurse-boy, gimme your phone." Sorry, Rory's busy bouncing reality checks. Give him a minute, he'll be fine.

-Ah, the same question I asked earlier nets an explanation for the dog, thank you. So Prisoner Zero is manifesting as what these people are dreaming in their comas? ... these people have boring dreams. Which is probably a good thing, because Prisoner Zero is freaky enough without being twenty feet tall, shooting lasers and flying. Also, wouldn't be so good at the blending in then. Twenty feet tall, people would notice.

-Oh Rory has a classic Mini Cooper. I like Rory. Can he bring the car with him? It's small, and the Tardis is going to get rebuilt anyway.

-This Jeff guy looks a bit like Captain Awesome from Chuck.

-Psychic paper versus a laptop cam secure conference call some of which doesn't even look like its video... okay, yeah sure! If the Doctor can suddenly see all sides of a person standing on a village green, right down to the lettering on their nametag, why not?

-I'm a bit amused that Rory's license plate N191 CUY looks a bit like 'Nice Guy' Also, yeah, these two are companion material. "Go clear the coma patients out of a hospital with no authority and no resources whatsoever." and off they go, tra la. Well, off Amy goes, dragging Rory. I'm hoping Rory will get a fairer shake of it than Mickey did to start with. From what I've heard, the early bits might be rocky, but the end will kick ass.

-Oh crap, she has pre-adolescent girls in identical dresses. RUN!!!

-"The universe is cracked, the Pandorica will open, silence will fall." Ah, nothing like a plainly declared outright series arc statement straight off the top. That's one thing I really like about British shows, they film everything before they air it, so arcs stay arcy without suddenly changing mid-season because showrunners get nervous about mercurial fan reactions.

-Ohhhh! Resetting everything to ZERO. Wow, I'm thick tonight.

-"Who da man?" *EPIC FACEPALM* Who. Da man. Gaaaaaaah. Please, dude, never say that again.

-"I'm never saying that again." THANK YOU! This Doctor listens to me. Well, once at least.

-"And I've had years." OH SHIT! I am really, really slow tonight, I totally didn't see that coming.

-HAHAHAHA!!! Amy's coma dream is the Doctor. Oh dear.

-Ohhhh, wee!Amy with the Doctor. Oh. Owww.

-"Sorry about the bill." Hee! Wait. The sonic screwdriver is dead, when did he give it universal roaming... or did he have the spaceship's number? Or was it a- Oh, okay, that was the phone they tracked Prisoner Zero to, so they were probably still monitoring it, and, um... something. Handwavey whatsis connection. Yeah! Sure!

-The Doctor suiting up in a hospital change room, he hasn't done that since he was Eight. XD

-Amy looks waaaaaay too interested in the Doctor's stripping. O.o

-"You are not of this world."/"No, but I've put a lot of work into it." Very true.

-"Is it protected?" Hee! Bad guy montage! Aw, Doctor montage :-D Oh yes, and the bow tie.

-Tardis has a new thingy on the door.... Something ambulance? And the blue tone looks like it has a hint more magenta tilt to it, but that might be the lighting.

-"Oh you sexy thing." *chokes on water* O.O

-"Brand new Tardis, bit exciting." After leaving you to wait a total of fourteen years? Belt him.

-"That was two years ago." *headshake* Dude. Temporal navigation. Work on it.

-"I grew up."/"Don't worry, I'll soon fix that." *nods quietly with a big grin* Yeah.

-Hmmm... New console room is a bit more steam-punky, which is cool. The glass floor would be nerve-wracking though, the number of times landings go a bit rough. Probably not glass though, just see through.

-Ohhh, that's why the long lingering weirdly framed shot of the oscillating thingy. It has a Crack line. Ahah! Cute.

-"I am definitely a madman with a box." Heeee! \o/

-... The, uh, Time Rotor looks rather... um.... fragile. Yes. Fragile. That's the word I was looking for. >.>

-Ah, yes, of course, tomorrow is her wedding day. She's going to have one hell of a stagette.

I'll be watching through these as fast as I can, which won't be very fast given my work schedule and other obligations, but please refrain from discussing episodes I haven't watched yet in the comments, even if I've mentioned stuff from them in the Spoiler section. Not that anyone's likely to be reading these reactions, but I like make sure things are clear. :-D

I figured you might be interested. The second one is up, but the rest are going to be a bit slower going.

IIIIIIIIIIIII'm totally reading them. Series five has grown on me a lot since I watched it the first time through, so watching someone else watch it the first time through is terribly entertaining!

Whee! Someone else to share the insanity! It could get weird out here!

What do you mean, I'll sure be reading these! :) Eleven is fast becoming my favorite Doctor (although I admit I am still attempting to begin to catch up on Old Skool Who), and series 5, while it has its weaknesses, is just... amazing. So awesome.
caffienekitty From: caffienekitty Date: April 9th, 2011 05:50 pm (UTC) (Link)
Ten will always be The Doctor to me, but I'm starting to see how Eleven fits.

Unfortunately for me this was the only episode of s5 I am good with. The rest...dunno.

Great characters, actors, visuals, scripts (well, most of the time) but to me there's this spark missing. I can't explain it, but the squee is gone.

Doctor Who will always hold a place in my heart though, and, woah, isn't Karen Gillian a babe? ;)

The post-RTD series seems to be divisive in fandom for sure. It's taken a while to get up the nerve, but I'm willing to give the new guy a shot. I don't think anyone will bring the same depth to the role as Tennant did. His fan knowledge of the classic series really helped, I think.

I'll be very intrigued to see what you think after you watch some more eps. And there are other sorts of depth than angst. Not that Tennant only did angst, he's too good an actor for that, but... man, I can't, I'll spoil you. Shutting up now. Sorry. :)

See I think a lot of the ups and downs were put in there very deliberately, because even I was "grr arrgh" and then "oh!" and they so toy with you deliberately in my opinion. *g* Hope you enjoy it! I will be all spoiler free for ya!

Much appreciated. :-)

Go read this. Is little Amelia and the Doctor and as a bonus Jack! And Amelia is unflappable as always. Is perfect and honestly, makes me miss Jenny.

It was inevitable. Now it's just a matter of seeing if I can get through them all before Supernatural comes back.

I want to marry these, also? You are in for such a treat with the coming season.

Glad you like them! I don't know if I'll be getting as huge with these for series six as I did towards the end of series five, especially since LJ is not talking to my batch uploader and uploading the caps for 5.13 took several hours to do manually, but we'll see. :-)
