Spoiler and Theory Summary

Title: Citizen Fang. So, Benny's back. Also, this is the last ep before the winter hiatus, so expecting a cliff-hanger or major plot-development.

That combination makes me think that the Benny issue between the boys is going to get very very ugly.

Also, if the hint that maybe Sam's girlfriend's husband 'came back wrong' and Sam had to deal with him holds water, then the intense reaction Sam had towards Benny takes on a perhaps slightly different light, but make Sam's recent calmness that much weirder. Hmmmm... If he's worried about Benny that much and then suddenly doesn't seem to be... I wonder if he's tipped off some hunters about Benny. Which, if I'm right about the situation with Sam's girlfriend's husband, would be an understandable step to take, even though if he did do that there will be all the yelling ever.

Anyway, I'm thinking given the title and the placement in the season, Sam will in some way imperil Benny in a deliberate way, or Benny will go hunting for humans and need to be hunted down, or it will look that way but actually not be the case, and Benny might get killed, and Sam and Dean will definitely have some really big reasons for having a really big argument and possibly split up just before the hiatus. Or something. Pre-hiatus episode with heavy Benny involvement means EVERYTHING GOES BOOM, at least for a while.

Right. Onward.

Picspam Reaction, with speculation and randomness for Supernatural 8.09 - "Citizen Fang"

-The Then's seem to be clocking in at under 45 seconds lately.

-Music! "Born on the Bayou" by Creedence Clearwater Revival, whose songs have accompanied some of the heavy hits of this show, particularly the Impala getting t-boned by a semi and the discovery of Frank Devereaux's (alleged) messy death.

-Hee! There's something kind of funny about a vampire running a restaurant. I guess it's a bit like farming though. Feed the things you'll be eating later. Except Benny does the donated blood thing, so he probably just feeds people gumbo and encourages them really hard to go donate at the local clinic. Yes we've only seen the restaurant sign, but come on. Cajun cafe, "Born on the Bayou" Benny's either running it or working there.
spn0809 001

-Yep. Hi Benny. Not the boss, but still. If he doesn't put up a big notice about donating blood anytime there's a blood drive in the area, I would be shocked. ...I don't know what that silver and black critter on the till next to Benny is supposed to be, but it's oddly disturbing.
spn0809 002

-"You don't mind if I take a shot?" Pffft. Heh. Why do I suddenly get the feeling the old guy is maybe another vampire and is asking about a different sort of? Paranoia I suppose. Or that for some reason his upper teeth seem slightly out of sync with his face.
spn0809 003

-Yeah, guy with coffee and lingering camera angles, you're not suspicious at aaaaaaall. I'm watching you...
spn0809 004

-Aw. It can't be the original Roadhouse building, because they did actually set that on fire when filming the end of season 2, but maybe it's the Heavenly Roadhouse building? If so, aw.
spn0809 005

-Yep. Those lingering camera angles with get you every time. So. Old vampire pal of Benny's is unlikely since Benny didn't recognize him and Benny's also killed most if not all of his old nest. So. Hunter. Leather coat provides practical defense versus cutting and slashing attacks. The big question is, if he tracking Benny on his own, or did a well-meaning yet infuriatingly non-communicative six-foot-five birdie with arguably evil hair tip him off?
spn0809 006

-Sorry, taking a moment to appreciate the BC greenery trying so hard to be like Louisiana.
spn0809 007

-Not a very observant hunter to trip over an obvious fresh corpse. Also, either Benny's boss didn't appreciate the old fella 'taking a shot' or Benny taught him a rather extreme lesson in manners. Either way, I'm only disappointed he wasn't a vampire.
spn0809 008

-Furtive phone calls are not helping your case here, Sam.
spn0809 009

-"Crazy Martin, from the looney bin?" *facepalm* That's why he looked vaguely familiar and was ringing hunter bells. He was the hunter in the Psych ward in "Sam, Interrupted" back in season 5. Didn't recognize him with clothes on. I mean normal clothes instead of hospital pj's. Of course. Good to see him out in the world, though. Even if he is hunting Benny.

-"I've had him tracking Benny for the past week." Oh Sam. *headshake* I get the general intent behind it, sort of, though that outburst at the end of Southern Comfort is hard to look past. If there's something with Amelia's spouse having 'come back wrong' then there's at least something to explain where that came from, but Sam's not telling Dean or us anything, so we are stuck with this on face value, and it really doesn't look too great for Sam, at least certainly not from Dean's perspective, which means all the lovely rapport we've had for the last few episodes is about to come crashing down around our ears. Gah. Flashback faster, Sam, or better yet talk to your brother.

-"If Benny's in Louisiana drainin' folks, we should look into it." Ow. True, very fair-minded of Dean to want to see the evidence rather than backing Benny without a qualm. Of course his walls just got about twenty feet thicker. Possibly twenty thousand feet thicker, but that remains to be seen.
spn0809 010
spn0809 011

-"He may be Benny to you, folks around here call him Roy *eyebrow waggle*" Well, that tears it, he's obviously evil. I think Martin might be a little wobbly yet.
spn0809 012

-Written by Daniel Loflin, his turn to fly solo. Directed by Nick Copus, first time for Supernatural, but he's directed The 4400, Alphas, Nikita, so we'll see what he does with Supernatural.

-"A little shock therapy in the morning and I'm good to go." Mine's coffee, I'm hoping his is too, and he's not improvising with household AC power. O.o

-"This sound like the Benny you know?"/"I don't know Benny." Very true. Of course the epic death glare on meeting him wasn't exactly conducive to a getting-to-know-your-brother's-new-friend chat down at the local pub.
spn0809 013

-Okay, yes, Dean defending Benny, Martin keeping to the hunter party line of all vampires are evil, Sam being wisely quiet and neutral against the brick wall and all that, but what the hell is up with that ceiling fan???
spn0809 014

-"We're gonna give him a little bit of time." Sam being reasonable and fair, this is very good.
spn0809 015

-"Sometimes it's not easy to see things for what they are." Aaaaand flashback. Amelia's newly not-dead husband Don's totally a zombie or something, isn't he?

-"Maybe I'm gong to Hell for saying this, but I'm not ready to give this up." Not like you haven't been to Hell before. Actually, it was Lucifer's special lockbox before, Hell would be a picnic after that. Now. I can see that Sam's reasoning here is kind of selfish, and I can understand it, but I still kind of want to smack him for adding pressure to Amelia who is already in a high pressure situation by telling her what he wants to happen. Also, Don's her husband, and she's spent the last while losing her mind grieving him. I can see Sam's perspective, and I don't think he's being fair, and I can sort of get why he's not being fair, but it's still a nasty old ball of relationship drama and damn it, I just want someone to turn out to be an indisputable monster so everything is simple again. Sort of. ARG! *headdesk*
spn0809 016

-"Neither am I." Well then. If Don isn't a ravening member of the undead, may I suggest polyamory? I don't think Don will be too keen on it either way, but it's worth a shot.
spn0809 017

-"It was gonna be the gumbo until I saw that." PIE! \o/
spn0809 018

-"Or you can just drop a dime yourself." How long has it been since Dean flirted on a case? I think it's a bit of a smoke-screen to ease her out of the suspicious mindset she was heading towards with all the questions about where 'Roy" is, but still. Kind of nostalgia there.

-"Do I need to tell you what this looks like." Considering I was wondering about Dean possibly being under some kind of glamour from Benny at first, this adherence to getting the facts over trusting that Benny didn't do it because he's Dean's BFF is quite reassuring.
spn0809 019

-Another body. Crap. Well, I'm thinking that it isn't Benny, and that he's tracking down the vampire (or other critter) that is doing it, but that it's going to continue to look nothing but bad for Benny. Since it is the last episode before the hiatus and Dean needs a new source of angst in his life.
spn0809 020

-"It's not me, Dean." That's going to be a tricky sell considering the freshly filled grave and the blood and chunky bits you're washing off your hands.
spn0809 021

-It's a giant knife party and everyone's invited! Whee! \o/
spn0809 022

-Rogue vampire named Desmond. I am inclined to believe Benny, though Dean will likely want more evidence because he has two armed associates who aren't going to take Benny's word for anything.

-"I know it's hard to believe but I haven't always been this cute and cuddly." Heeeeeeeeee!
spn0809 023

-"Went back to my old job at the cafe." Wow, that cafe has been there an long time considering Benny was in Purgatory for 50 years. I suppose the architecture does support that though.

-"Elizabeth."/"My great-granddaughter." And you told the skeevy guy he could take a shot at her? Not exactly grandfatherly of you there, Benny.

-"Really?" Hee! Dean with the 'awkwaaard' face. Don't worry, I'm sure she'd be better off with you than the last guy gramps here sent her way.
spn0809 024

-Also, randomly, if this Desmond finds out or knows Elizabeth is Benny's great grand-kid, who do you think is going to end up on the dinner table as a pawn before the episode is over? Yeah. Basic motivational tactics that.

-"After all those years in Purgatory not having to deal with the hunger." Aha! It had been mentioned by someone somewhere that eating etc wasn't required in Purgatory, good to have it mentioned in an episode. You'd think that'd make Monsters calmer when they hit Purgatory, since a lot of them kill based on a need to feed in some way. You know, for some (Rugarus, vampires) an escape from constant hunger or thirst might be a sort of Heaven. Hmm.

-"That half-wit was sent by my brother and trust me my brother is not someone you want to mess with." I am oddly pleased by Dean's backing of Sam's badassness.
spn0809 025

-Martin has some issues, yeah.
spn0809 026

-"Are we just going on trust here?"/"Yes."/"Okay. Because we've killed on a lot less, and you know how these things turn out for us." Heeeeee, sad but true. For the Winchesters trust and a pack of matches usually gets their fingers burned. Aw.
spn0809 027

-"In fact every relationship I've ever had has gone to crap at some point." Pointedly looking at Sam. Ow. Also very true, but also very ow.
spn0809 028
spn0809 029

-And then they get into it a little bit, and I curl up under my blanket for a little while. Ow ow ow.
spn0809 030
spn0809 031

-"You go with him, you're a dead man, period." Uh oh. Not usually a good idea to turn your back on someone who's not quite rational and has recently launched a vicious attack on an inanimate object after saying something like that.
spn0809 032

-Oh good, just a knockout with the hilt, not a stab in the back. I don't think Sam would have been to willing to continue on hunting with a guy who stabbed Dean. Maybe.
spn0809 033
spn0809 034

-"All you're gonna do is shut up and follow my lead." Sucker-punch or no, Sam's still not happy. Good. And takes the Impala keys off Martin. Even better.
spn0809 035

-"Brother chooses a vampire over a brother? I know how I'd feel." And incoming flashback. Things aren't looking good for Don Richardson. Also, things are looking far too good for Sam's hair. It's alarming.
spn0809 036

-Oh dear. Hello Don.
spn0809 037

-"But the only one who knows what's best for Amelia, is Amelia. So when all of this is said and done, and she's made her decision, I'll respect it. And if you truly love her you'll do the same." THANK YOU. About time someone said it. I like you Don, and I hope you aren't some evil undead creature Sam's going to need to kill, although it would simplify things and explain Sam's behaviour. Unless of course you're only saying this because you're sure she'll choose you and will be going psycho-ex on her if she chooses an option that doesn't include you. But that's probably me being paranoid and getting far too far ahead of things.

-Yep, you didn't get punched in the face, you didn't get a big blow-up, you got a damned reasonable talking to, and I really hope it sank in, or sinks in in retrospect because Sam needs a dose of reasonable.
spn0809 038

-Pft. Handcuffs. Dean'll be out the door and after them before they get the Impala started.
spn0809 039

-"No offense, Dean but your little brother doesn't exactly put chills up my spine." He does kind of suck at hand to hand, but he's got a guy who rages out at ice cubes with him. Still, unless you've got the area around the camper littered with pit traps, probably best to pack up, roll out and get where there's people. Hard for hunters to chop your head off if there's witnesses.
spn0809 040

-"This is my fight. Are you in or are you out?" Considering it's the only chance he has of keeping your head on your shoulders, he's in. This is an interesting dynamic. Sam and Martin as one hunting team hunting Benny, who is hunting the real perp and inviting Dean along. Hunting and hunted. Not quite complex enough for a flowchart, which is good. Nifty.
spn0809 041
spn0809 042
Hunh. There's the Impala. Sam must have taken Martin's own keys from him. Good.

-Well that there is an interesting and unexpected development. O.o
spn0809 043

-Aw crap. And Dean mentioned the great-granddaughter in his defense of Benny didn't he? Craaaaaap. Though really, if you have one photo of a loved one and are being hunted by people who will use anything they can find against you, why would you leave such a small, easily portable object behind? Unless Benny wants whoever to track her down and has laid a trap of some kind, but I don't think that makes sense for Benny. ...Unconscious self-destructive streak that will put Elizabeth at risk too? ...eeek. O.O
spn0809 044

-*car starts up*/"Sam?" And Sam just steals the guy's car and leaves Martin the unbalanced hunter out in the woods on the trail of Benny and now Benny's great-granddaughter. WOW. What the heck is going on with Amelia? O.O
spn0809 045

-"Winchesters!" Heeeeeeeeeeee. Also oh crap, because if Martin doesn't go the implied route of threatening Elizabeth to get Benny to come out, he is going to end up being vamp chow, and that probably wont look good if that's discovered before Dean catches up with Benny. Martin's life expectancy is not looking too good either way.
spn0809 046

-Caaaar! In the dark, but I haven't had a single decent cap of her this episode and I was feeling mildly bereft.
spn0809 047

-"I hang back while you guys do some trust falls and binge drinking?" ...I am getting a sudden very bad feeling from this camera angle... Like maybe Benny's going to whack him on the head and drag him to Desmond as a 'welcome to the new nest' present. Which may or may not be done as a ruse. I... hmmmm... I'm way too paranoid. O.O
spn0809 048

-Flashlight-fu!
spn0809 049

-And another paranoia-inducing camera angle. Show, you're making me twitchy and distrustful of Benny.
spn0809 050

-Oh and a classic 'shadow blurring past the stalking' thing. Yeah. That's not reassuring.
spn0809 051

-GAAAAH COMPLETELY SILENT GUY DROPPING UNCAPPABLY FROM CEILING IS NOT RIGHT GAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!! O.O

-"You're not gonna talk a lot, are ya? I have been dealing with crazy all day." Heeee. Distraction by snark. Awesome.
spn0809 052

-*shatters the syringe of (I assume) Dead Man's Blood in his fist* OWWWW. Also, that's incredibly unhygienic.

-EEK! Not a lot of blood though, so mostly surface cut. Also, how many times has Dean's neck been attacked by a vampire now? Gordon, the actual turning into a vampire incident and this? Or has there been more? Dean's neck is like catnip for vampires (as an online reviewer once described Bella Swan's blood, so take from that what you will).
spn0809 053

-There we are. I was worried about Benny for a while there. Buuuut now there's Martin and Martin's boneheaded plans to deal with. *headdesk*
spn0809 054

-Oh crap. Benny, resist the catnip....
spn0809 055
spn0809 056

-...uh, Benny?
spn0809 057
spn0809 058

-Gooooood Benny. There's some nice donated AB negative in a cooler somewhere I'm sure. Stabilized with chemicals and chilled. Yeah... eeep.
spn0809 059

-Yes Dean, your friend really is a vampire.
spn0809 060

-"Guys like us, we don't get a home. We don't get family."/"You got Sam."/"...yeah." Owwwwwwwww.
spn0809 061

-"I got one last thing I gotta do." Get your great-granddaughter away from Martin who is no doubt already setting her up for use as bait and confusing the hell out of her by babbling about vampires? Yeah, that's important to do before you go into hiding. Speaking of hiding, have you considered Forks, Washington? Just a thought. Hide among the false positives so to speak, since any hunter getting a report of vaguely hinted vampire activity like missing blood donations in Forks is going to roll their eyes and wave it off as Twilight fans getting freaky.

-Calling someone on a cell phone while driving far too fast at night on probably wet roads is very poor driving habits, Sam. But at least you're driving Martin's crappy station wagon instead of the Impala. I sense an imminent flashback explaining the urgency here. Having a flashback while driving fast at night on wet roads is probably also bad driving habits but I'm willing to handwave that for the sake of getting some detail that might more fully explain what's going on with Sam this season.
spn0809 062

-"The person you are trying to reach is unavailable." So she's on the line or the phone is switched off and Sam's angry reaction to that is making me really nervous. O.o

-"I know that you and Don deserve a chance and I think you know that too." Saaaam, I know you are trying to be noble and crap but you are confusing all hell out of Amelia and still telling her what you want or think and not asking her what she wants or thinks.
spn0809 063

-"Thanks for not giving up on me, brother."/"Don't give me a reason to." Few thoughts here. First, if you are getting out of town, you'll need that last paycheque so you might want to pick that up and do your great-granddaughter the dubious favour of letting her know you're quitting so she can hire someone else and also not report you missing to the authorities. Second, there is faaaaar too much time left on the counter for this to be getting anything but ugly real fast.
spn0809 064
spn0809 065

-Or Benny will take off and leave Dean to deal with Martin's imminent idiocy with Elizabeth on his own, with no Benny to show and nothing Martin will believe to stop him. As I said: ugly.
spn0809 066

-"Oh. That's good, Dean." Yeaaaaaaah. That's not a tone of voice that bodes well at all.
spn0809 067

-"You don't have to worry about me, Dean, I'm long gone too." Oh craaaaap. What the heck are you up to Martin? Is it worse than going after Elizabeth, because you are sounding more than a little off there. O.O

-Yeah. Crap. Here we go.
spn0809 068

-The Lower Mainland does do good greenery. Even in the dark.
spn0809 069

-"She's a nice girl. Takes kindly to strangers." Okay, Martin, you are pinning my creep alarms now.
spn0809 070

-The primary question now being did Benny call Dean for backup en route, or is this going to go very very badly?

-The showdown is at the restaurant. I saw that mobile of bottles in the background and thought it was conspicuous but didn't mention it.
spn0809 071

-Now, Martin. This is the time to ask yourself; between you and the vampire, which of you is currently imperiling an innocent person?
spn0809 072

-"You realize I'm not askin'." Eheheheheheh. Moment of badass for Benny. I like it.
spn0809 073

-"She doesn't know." Oh crap. GREAT. Like she's going to believe a raving person who has a knife to her throat when he starts going on about vampires anyway, but still. She's already having a rough day.

-OH YOU SON OF A BITCH. Yeah, this is going to add weight to the vampire story. I really hope Benny grabbed a snack out of the cooler after the incident with Dean.
spn0809 074

-"Tell her about the monster that you are!" Oh man, Benny. With the face. Oh man. Eeeek. *flailing*
spn0809 075

-"I want your head on a stake!" I don't quite know why, but Elizabeth's reaction to there suddenly being an EVEN BIGGER KNIFE near her head is giving me the giggles. But it's been that kind of week.
spn0809 076

-...oh jeez. Oh wow. Oh Benny. Just laying his head down to be chopped off. Wow. Bennyyyyyyyy. O.O
spn0809 077

-"Roy, no."/"I'm sorry." Oh god, and she's going to have to watch and even without knowing he's her great granddad she's going to be scarred for life, but at least she'll be able to get Martin locked back up, since this is never going to look good for him. What this will do between Sam and Dean, since as far as Dean knows Sam's with Martin (maybe?), remains to be seen.
spn0809 078
spn0809 079
And I realize this is a far from appropriate juncture to note this, but I keep giggling at the conspicuous placement of Louisiana Red Hot sauce bottles everywhere in this restaurant. *points to blurry yellow and red thing above Benny's head* There were big bottles of it behind the counter earlier on.

-Oh yeah. Scarred for life.
spn0809 080

-And now we'll see what got Sam haring off and leaving Martin to actually successfully hunt down and kill (although there was no blood spray and this show loves its blood spray) Benny the huggable vampire and thereby generate an even huger, honkinger rift between him and Dean. Considering he feels a gun is necessary, it could be quite dire. Although this is Texas, so guns might have a different level of direness.
spn0809 081

-Okay, what the hell. Is this a flashback, or has Sam been delusionally stalking Amelia, or what? What about the phone message? What about the dog? Is Don some kind of creature projecting a 'happy home' image to make Sam go away? WHAT?! I THOUGHT THOSE FLASHBACKS WERE FAR TOO SATURATED AND GAUZY TO BE REAL, BUT SERIOUSLY, WHAT?!?? O.o
spn0809 082
spn0809 083
spn0809 084

-Music! "I feel Alright" by Steve Earle, with Dean vaguely singing and drumming along. Yeah, those lyrics are going to be very much not applicable after this phone call, I think.
spn0809 085

-"You told me to call if I saw... him?" Ohhhhh crap. Yeah. Unless Benny jumped up and wrenched Martin's head off and ran, this is really not looking good for Benny.
spn0809 086

-BOOTLEGGER (I think?) REVERSE WITH THE IMPALA! Haven't had one of those in a while! \o/
spn0809 087

-WHY HELLO THERE CROSSROADS. HOW INTERESTING THAT YOU SHOW UP RIGHT NOW. *PONDERS* O.O
spn0809 088

-Dean is definitely not feeling alright now. Eeeeek.
spn0809 089

-I really like the way Elizabeth's reaction to what she's seen is being played. It's understated, it's not shrieking and screaming and yet it's still wholly terrified, shaking, no words because what the hell do you say? Very well done.
spn0809 090

-Also well done, framing. I like you, new-to-Supernatural director Nick Copus. Though a wee bit more lighting would be nice perhaps.
spn0809 091

-Okay. All that furniture wasn't overturned before. Did Benny fight back? Is Martin dead?
spn0809 092

-Weeeeeeell crap. And his throat looks rather macerated. Double crap. This is really not going to help Benny at all, even if it turns out one of Desmond's other recruits happened by and did the actual chomping. And now Dean has guilt and betrayal of trust. And Sam is going to be loaded down with 'I told you so's and just AAAAAAAAArg. The back 2/3 of the season just gained a boatload of Ow.
spn0809 093
spn0809 094

-Yes Sam. Why did she send you a message asking for help if everything is as it appears to be. Though she's used correct punctuation in a text message, so it wasn't a rushed message. Hm.
spn0809 095

-Wait. Amelia's phone is one of Dean's? What. The fuck. O.O

-"'Sam, I need your help, come quick.' Nice one." ...WHAT??? Dean sent.... WHAT???????!! O.O

-I'm gonna be stuck on "WHAT?" for a while, so have some caps of the boys on phones.
spn0809 096
spn0809 097
spn0809 098

-"Is it done?"/"It's done." WHAT??? OKAY THIS EXPLAINS THE PHOTO BEING LEFT BEHIND IF THIS WAS ALL AN ELABORATE SOMETHING TO GET BENNY INTO HIDING BUT SERIOUSLY, WHAT?????

-"Any casualties?"/"Martin."/"Was it Benny?" Oh dear, and now we get shouty and I don't know who was involved in tricking who with what anymore, but this has all caught me by total surprise, which is rare, so kudos for that, show. You have made me blow a major plot-development-related boggle check. Very rare. Going to be going "WHAT?!" for a while.
spn0809 099

-"I know what happened, Dean."/"You wanna listen to me or not?"/"*disconnect*" That would be a big ol' NOT. The ow will be visible from space, I'm telling you.
spn0809 100
spn0809 101

-Sam startles pretty. Just sayin'.
spn0809 102

-Hi non-flashback Amelia! Are you going to give us some actual, non super-saturated gauzy facts about Sam's end of the flashback situation after the hiatus maybe?
spn0809 103

-"I knew that was you." Sam: *starts hyperventilating, maybe* Oh dear.
spn0809 104

SO! Interesting. Benny isn't permanently gone, and neither is the Benny issue. Dean has some oddly smug-tinged angst, Sam and Amelia have some talking to do that might scare the lights out of Sam, and we'll see what all happens with Kevin and the stone tablets and all that other good stuff sometime in January!

Apparently Dean did something to make a call from one of his cell phones appear to be coming from Amelia's. (Someone with lots more tech saavy than me said that elsewhere.) The key point being that it was something Dean had to do in advance, so he was prepared to get Sam out of the way when he needed to. Um, trust? Yeah, guess not...And the fact that Sam showed up to see Amelia and Don being domestic was purely a coincidence.

I think at this point the Sam/Amelia/Don story is all human, no supernatural reason after all. Which is a bit disappointing, but also kind of daring for Carver to play it that way, judging by the number of fans who are not happy with it.

Oh how Dean did the thing with Sam's phone is simple; he took Sam's phone at some point and programmed the number of a new burner phone under Amelia's name, so that if he texted from it it would read out as Amelia. At a guess, I'd say Dean did that right after Sam's outburst at the end of Southern Comfort, in case he needed to pull Sam of Benny's trail, which he did.

Don's looking more like he's probably a regular human, which is good because there are times when regular humans seem rare in Supernatural, but it's not helping explain Sam's behaviour toward hunting and Benny any much.

I admit, the phone-fu surprised me as well. Very devious of Dean, and it does not bode well for trust. I also appreciated Elizabeth's understated reaction. Very irritated that Sam and Don didn't respect Amelia enough to make her OWN decisions, but i09 agreed with us there. Men are bloody great morons, just saying. The remainder of the season will require great amounts of tea and blankets. Oh, and I do love Benny.

The boys and their trust issues, oy vey. I may have wanted to smack Sam a little with the way he handled Amelia there. The boy is clueless on all fronts lately.

Benny is cool, and kind of cuddly. In a burly cajun vampire sort of way. ^.^

I'm a lot less convinced of Benny's basic goodness than you are. We never saw Desmond kill anyone and Benny's story is weak in many ways. I do think the writers are going for Benny the Good, but I'm still not sold and I understand completely why Sam and Martin weren't sold.

You say you understand why Dean hasn't introduced Sam to Benny by seeing Sam's face. It's true now, but Sam has always been a give the monsters a chance kind of guy. It's not that Dean isn't introducing them now, it's that Dean hid Benny like a dirty little secret. Dean is acting about Benny the way Sam acted about Ruby in season four. If Dean had come back, told Sam that Benny the vampire fought with him in Purgatory, helped him find the way out and Dean brought him back to life I don't think Sam would have had a problem. Sam was out of hunting when Dean came back and Dean knew it. He had the perfect opportunity to let Sam know about Benny and let him meet him and make certain that Sam does know Benny while Sam is still in non-hunter mode. The one thing Sam knows about is being played by a monster and having been played he can see where Dean could be being fooled.

I have no idea how Dean switched the numbers. It could be high tech. It could be that he got Sam's phone and changed Amelia's phone number to that of Dean's phone. All that came up on the text message was Amelia's name, not her number. Sam didn't see the number until he looked at it again after finding out Amelia was fine and had no reason to send a Help message. Frankly I use only my cell phone and my daughter who I call a lot is really just speed dial 2, I don't know the actual number off the top of my head. In any case, sending an I need help now message to a guy whose girlfriends tend to end up dead, not just with a flat tire in the middle of nowhere was pretty uncaring. Saying Martin deserved to die is uncaring as well. Yes, he shouldn't have used Liz as a hostage and from Benny's view he deserved it, but Martin was a friend and a colleague who they had trusted in the past. At the very least Dean could have held the Martin deserved it until he was face to face with Sam and laid things out then. Just a Martin is dead, Benny's in the wind and I'll tell you about it later.

I do know that the CW originally planned to run Supernatural without breaks until this week and then decided to not show it on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, so this was not supposed to be the mid-season finale. I'm ticked because they are showing the mid-season finales for Vampire Diaries, Arrow and Nikita next week, but the PLANNED mid-season finale with whatever the ending would have been for Supernatural to go into break got pushed back to January. This was a reasonably good cliffhanger, but still. (I don't think that was spoilery was it?) Supernatural still gets no love from the network.

Love from a network? Try getting blood from a stone, your odds are better.

The more hints there are that Benny might be evil, the more I'm convinced he's good. There is still the Alpha Vamp out lurking around, along with other vampires who might have caught word of one of their own returning from Purgatory and be sniffing around.

You do have a point about Sam suspecting Dean might be being played by Benny, but I don't think Dean has made Benny any more of a deliberate secret than Sam made Amelia. I do see what you're saying about Sam though.

The phone trick is easy. Dean took Sam's phone at some point and programmed the number of a new burner phone under Amelia's name, so that if he texted from it it would read out as Amelia. At a guess, I'd say Dean did that right after Sam's outburst at the end of Southern Comfort, in case he needed to pull Sam of Benny's trail, which he did.

Knowing that this wasn't the intended mid season cliffhanger is a slight spoiler because I'll expect the first episode back to be intense. No worries though, by the time we get to it I might have forgotten. My memory has been crap the past few years. :-P

Well I can redeem myself. Jim Michaels who said the mid-season finale was supposed to be episode 10 has tweeted an OOPS. He misremembered the number. Episode 9 was indeed the planned season finale and these were the cliffhangers. No idea how things will start up again.

Dean is clever with Sam's phone! Who-hoo! (I'm guessing he changed Amelia's number in Sam's phone to his own spare phone number so when he texted Sam on his spare phone, it came up on Sam's phone as Amelia...???)

Bennyyyyy! Just loved that bit where he laid his head on the counter. *gulp*

I liked how the women were presented in this ep too - especially the part where Don and Sam realise they have to let Amelia decide what she wants to do, and, as you said, the calm (yet terrified) way Elizabeth dealt with the situation. (Kathleen Monroe was really good in The Kids Are Alright too!)

Yeah, I just assumed that was what he'd done so I didn't mention the details. I didn't think the technical aspects of it where that confusing, but it seems to be a more complex trick for watchers to catch than I'd thought. o.O

Oh, god, I know!

That's where she's from! She was so awesome in that too, with her own separate storyline practically.

1. The weird statue is a likely a souvenir from Hersey Pennsylvania - it is a hersey's kiss with a bear's head - the local minor league hockey farm team is the Hersey Bears but that might be a coincidence as bears & chocolate go way back.

2. Dean got a hold of Sam's phone and reprogrammed it to list a "burner" phone as Amelia. He was prepared to get rid of Sammy if necessary should the occasion arise. Which shows Dean knows Sam is more committed to Amelia than the job.

3. I agree with Dean that Martin had it coming. Just as Travis did with that rugaru. Lousiana seems to be where old hunters cross the line between hunting and being no better than the monsters themselves. There was no reason to drag poor Elizabeth into his hunt. What would he had done if he was wrong about Benny not attacking family? There is nothing in vampire lore to suggest vampire have a problem with it. Actually it shows how unbalanced Martin is.

1. Hunh. Bizarre.

2. Yep. I didn't think the technical aspects needed mentioned, but it seems I was wrong. O.o

3. Martin was off several rails before that cut away from him going to chop Benny's head off. Who knows what happened between that and him becoming a corpse except Elizabeth, who has probably given Dean enough scattered info for him to put the pieces together. Basically though, Martin went after a human and that seems to be the point of no return on this show.

Those camera angles were giving me the heebie jeebie vibes too. I was just waiting for Benny to whack Dean upside the head and offer him up or something.

I saw the thing about Dean tricking Sam with the phone on tumblr before I saw the episode. I'm thinking I should def avoid tumblr from now on until I've seen the ep. That place is a minefield.

This show is occasionally very good at generating lurking paranoia.

Oh god avoid Tumblr, yes. I poke my head in there now and then for Sherlock stuff, but minefield is an excellent word for it.

1) I'm glad Show could surprise you. I was starting to think you're psychic :)

2) Yes: Ouch, very, very ouch.

3) My personal pet theory about Don returning from the dead at about the same time Dean pops out of purgatory: Cas's new handler whose name eludes me right now has something to do with it. Basically the tamer version of burning Jess on the ceiling to get Sam back into hunting.

4) Not a single tie in this episode. I think I'm going into withdrawal...
caffienekitty From: caffienekitty Date: December 12th, 2012 05:51 am (UTC) (Link)
1. If I was psychic, I would have quietly won the lottery a few times and not be working at my crappy job.

2. Ouch indeed.

3. Hmm... An interesting theory.

4. They do have tie-free episodes now and then, though they are somewhat rare.

3. That would be a very interesting twist - after thinking about it I started to wonder if maybe Naomi wasn't an angel or that it was heaven she was zapping Castiel to. Castiel should recognize all the angel and everywhere in heaven - shouldn't he?

Also an interesting theory... IDK, I do get angel vibes from her, OTOH you're right about Cas knowing her...

As mid-season cliffhangers go this may have been the weakest yet--sorry but I call 'em like I see 'em:
--a desperate gambit where we witness the heroic deaths of Ellen and Jo,where Lucifer performs a spectacular spell raising Death himself, and where Lucifer takes a bullet from the Colt to the face and lives to snark about it--that's a cliffhanger.
--shooting Bobby in the head --that's a cliffhanger.
--killing Martin Creasor(a character they assasinated in this ep--he was a little cool and brave -considering- in the looneybin), and Sam confronting Amelia (dry toast meet tepid milk)--is not a cliffhanger.

Best things about the ep Dean, the atmosphere, the ever so slight tension involved in the Benny story (not a fan of his) and the 20 second preview of the next ep. Love this show (still present tense)and fingers firmly crossed hoping for better.

I don't get or watch the previews and try very hard not to know anything at all about them. Myself and several other people who read my reaction posts consider the previews spoilery, so please do not mention the previews here.
From: sssshup Date: December 16th, 2012 12:20 pm (UTC) (Link)
I am aware discussion of previews is considered spoilery which is why I didn't discuss it. Do you think my sayng I liked it better than most of this ep is spoilery. I like a lot of things better than I liked most of this ep; ice cream, cookies dancing,a good book, puzzles, at least 10 different musical genres and at least 150 or so other epidodes of this show.
caffienekitty From: caffienekitty Date: December 16th, 2012 01:51 pm (UTC) (Link)
It seems ridiculous, I realize, but saying there's a preview and expressing an opinion about it can make it easy to infer what's coming up.

[This is what I infer.]
You like it, so it likely advances plots and characters you prefer and not include things you don't like.

Therefore:

-Neither Benny nor Amelia are in it.

-Demons, or more likely Crowley, will almost certainly be in it.

-If Demons or Crowley are in it, that's likely some continuation on the tablet arc.

-If the tablet arc is being further advanced, there's a high probability that Castiel is in it, and that Castiel's arc with his handler will get some development since he will be pushed back into his observer position and a likely third meeting with his handler at which point the writers must advance that arc in some way or it will stagnate.

-And since I know you really liked Bobby and want to see the boys get past their individual sub-plots (Benny and Amelia), there is a small but significant chance someone will tell the boys to get over their mutual bullshit and get on with it, much like Bobby would have were he still around. Even odds on it being Castiel, Kevin, or Kevin's mom. Crowley or Sheriff Jody as long shots.

Please don't tell me if I'm close or far off on those inferences, I don't want to know. I'm only demonstrating what sort of inferences can be made when you mention what you think about the preview, whether there are any details from the preview or not. Can you see now why saying there was a preview and expressing an opinion about it might be considered spoilery?

In future, please don't mention the previews at all, even if only just to preserve my personal squee and peace of mind? I'd really appreciate it. :-)
